Frequently Asked Questions

What will I be making in this workshop?

You will be learning the fundamentals of hand-building with clay, specifically the "slab-building" technique. By the end of the workshop, you will have created your very own unique, functional pottery mug.

I'm a complete beginner, is this workshop suitable for me?

Absolutely! This workshop is designed specifically for beginners. We will guide you through every step of the process, from preparing the clay to building your mug and applying glaze. No prior experience is necessary.

What is "slab-building"?

Slab-building is a method of hand-building with clay where you roll out flat, uniform sheets (or "slabs") of clay. These slabs are then cut, shaped, and joined together to form a three-dimensional object, in this case, a mug.

What will happen to my mug after the workshop?

After you build your mug and apply the glaze, it needs to be fired in a ceramic kiln. We will handle this part for you! Your mug will go through glaze firing: This firing melts the glaze, creating a glossy, waterproof surface.

When can I pick up my finished mug?

The firing process takes time. Your mug will be ready for pick-up approximately 2-3 weeks after the workshop. We will notify you via email when your mug is ready to be collected.

Is the mug food-safe and dishwasher-safe?

Yes! Once your mug has been glaze-fired, it is completely food-safe and can be used for hot and cold beverages. The glazes we use are non-toxic. We recommend hand-washing to extend the life of your ceramic piece, but it is generally safe for the dishwasher as well.

What should I wear to the workshop?

Please wear comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting a little dusty or stained. Clay can be messy! We also recommend tying back long hair and trimming your fingernails for easier handling of the clay.

Do I need to bring anything?

Just bring yourself and your creativity! All tools, clay, glazes, and equipment will be provided.

Can I bring a friend?

Yes, please do! Workshops are a great activity to do with a friend or family member. Be sure to book your spots in advance as space is limited.
